Custard Bread Pudding | Eggless dessert recipes | First dish

Hello,

Are you craving sweets scrolling your Instagram feed all day? Here I come with an easy dessert recipe, my very first dish for you.

What is bread pudding?

Bread pudding is a popular dessert whose prime ingredients are bread, milk and sugar and eggs. It is soaked in the custard mixture of milk, eggs and sugar and baked altogether.
In this dish, eggs have been replaced by custard powder which is readily available in the market.

Nutritional value

Let's explore the nutrional value of bread pudding.
Ingredients like milk, as we all know is rich in calcium, protein and vitamins. It is a good source of energy and it strengthens our immune system. Also, using dry fruits, honey and maple syrup adds extra nutritional benefits. It helps in fighting bad cholesterol and is effective in managing diabetes.

What's the best part of this dish?

You do not have to throw your leftover or stale bread into the dustbin. Instead you can make the best use of stale bread by preparing this easy sweet dish. This dish takes less time and needs less ingredients to be ready.

How to prepare custard bread pudding?

Ingredients:
  • 4 Bread slices
  • 2 Tbsp. Custard Powder
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 Tbsp. Butter
  • 2 Tbsp. Sugar (You can add less if you want and replace sugar with honey, mapple syrup or jaggery)
  • Dried Cranberries/ Raisins and Nuts

I have tried preparing this bread pudding with custard powder only. If you wish to prepare bread pudding with eggs, custard powder wont be required. To prepare the custard sauce, you can refer the below link for the recipe.

Custard Sauce

Method:

1. Mix custard powder and little milk in a cup to get a liquid consistency for the custard sauce, no lumps should be there.

2. Take a baking container. Brush properly with butter. Tear the bread into square pieces and place it in the container.

3. Heat milk, sugar and the custard mixture prepared in step 1 together in a pan. Heat it for 3-5 minutes, should be liquid, do not let it thicken. Turn off the flame. Let the custard milk cool for 5 minutes.

4. Pour the liquid into the baking container. Ensure the pieces are properly submerged into the milk mixture. Add dry fruits and bake it at 180-degree C for 15-20 minutes in a preheated oven.

Few tips:

  • The pudding can be served immediately or can be refrigerated before consuming. The chilled pudding tastes really better. The leftovers can be stored in a refrigerator and can be served next day as well.
  • Stale bread is usually preferred in this dish. However, fresh breads can also be used.
  • The bread pudding tastes better when little bit of custard remains in liquid form instead of getting dried up completely while baking. If you do not wish to taste that way, you might have to bake for another 5-10 minutes.
  • Vanilla flavored custard powder is used in this dish. You may take any other flavor.
  • Along with dry fruits, you may also add cream, chocolate syrup, honey and maple syrup.
